Historic Premiership Wins in 2024 Rugby Season

19 Aug 2024

The 2024 Rugby season will be remembered as one of the most significant in Shore’s history. After 18 years, Shore’s First XV secured the GPS Premiership and, for the first time since 1969, claimed the title outright. This remarkable achievement is credited to the determination, resilience, and teamwork demonstrated by the boys throughout the season.

Despite a strong pre-season, the First XV faced early challenges in the GPS competition, enduring narrow defeats in the opening rounds. However, from Round 4 onward, the team found their rhythm and won all remaining matches. Highlights of the season included the penultimate game against St Joseph’s College on Old Boys Day, played in front of a packed Northbridge crowd, and the final away game and a thrilling victory over Scots College to secure the outright Premiership. Congratulations to Head Coach Mr Angus Sinclair and his coaching team Mr Craig, Mr Donoghue, Mr Somerville, and Mr Wallace, for their exceptional guidance throughout the season.

In addition to the First XV’s success, the Third XV claimed their first Premiership since 1951. In a dramatic finale, the team sealed their victory in the dying seconds against Sydney Grammar’s First XV. Congratulations to coaches Mr Byrnes and Mr Dobes, as well as Captain Angus (Year 12), for guiding the team to this historic win. With many players returning in 2025, the future of Shore Rugby looks bright.

The 2024 season saw Rugby’s growing popularity, with more teams fielded than in the past five years. The unwavering support from the Shore community; students, parents, staff, and Old Boys, played a vital role in this success. Rain or shine, the dedication of volunteers, spectators, and Facilities staff ensured the season’s smooth operation, with Northbridge fields maintained to an exceptional standard despite challenging weather.

The 2024 Rugby season showcased not only exceptional sporting achievements but also the camaraderie and community spirit that define Shore. To all our players, coaches, and supporters, thank you for making this season unforgettable. We look forward to building on this success in 2025.
