Nick Baxter ('97) thrives on collaboration, problem-solving, and delivering tangible results in his work. With a passion for stepping in during challenging moments and guiding projects toward meaningful outcomes, Nick has played a key role in managing large-scale developments across Sydney.

Nick credits his time at Shore with fostering a strong sense of self-reliance, responsibility, and adaptability, which have been key to his success in navigating challenges, leading projects, and achieving meaningful outcomes in his career.

What motivates you to do the work that you do?

What truly motivates me is working alongside a wide range of people and solving problems together. I find a lot of satisfaction in stepping in when things aren’t going quite as planned or when challenges arise and helping to find a solution. It's rewarding to work with different teams and organisations, coming up with a meaningful outcome or strategy that helps achieve that desired result. I love that my work feels tangible—I can see and feel the impact I've had on a project or development, and that’s incredibly fulfilling.

Looking back on your time at Shore, what were the most valuable things and values you learned?

The first thing that comes to mind is hard work and responsibility. It was about rolling up your sleeves and just getting on with it. But beyond that, I also learned the importance of organization, adaptability, and having the commitment to see things through. At Shore, you develop the flexibility to get things done, no matter what comes your way.

How did your education at Shore prepare you for your current role?

If there’s one key takeaway from my time at Shore, it’s self-reliance. The school really instilled a sense of responsibility for yourself, which has stayed with me.

Shore also gave me the confidence to take on any challenge—there were so many opportunities at school, and I loved getting involved in everything.

That sense of ‘you can do anything you put your mind to’ has been invaluable in my career. On the flip side, it also taught me that if you don’t put your mind to something, you won’t get the outcome you deserve.

What is your most memorable career accomplishment to date?

It has to be something I’ve built! I’ve worked on a number of large-scale projects, including some major landmarks in the heart of Sydney. Being closely involved in the project management and completion of those projects is something I’m really proud of.

What advice would you give to Shore students today?

Do everything. Seriously, if someone gives you an opportunity, take it—just walk through that door without hesitation. You can always change paths later, but don’t miss the chance to try something new. The school offers you so many opportunities, and sometimes you don’t realize how valuable they are until you look back. The teachers, facilities, and your fellow students are incredible. So, whatever you do, make the most of it and give it everything you've got!
